Riding from Sadao into Malaysia at Bukit Kayu Hitam
Sadao (Dannok) in Songkhla, across from Bukit Kayu Hitam in Kedah, is the main road crossing between Thailand and Malaysia. It's the busiest land checkpoint between the two countries, and it leads straight onto Malaysia's North–South Expressway [M1][M2]. It has the longest opening hours of the Thai–Malaysian road crossings, and the most recent first-hand reports [M1][M3].
You need three things on top of your passport. First, a Thai customs paper to take the bike out of Thailand. Second, Malaysian third-party insurance. Third, a free International Circulation Permit (ICP) from Malaysia's road transport department (JPJ) just after Malaysian immigration [M4][M5][M6].
This page covers Sadao only, with a short note on Padang Besar. Rules change often, so treat this as the latest information we could find and confirm, not a guarantee. Every fact below links to a source from October 2023 or later. Where we couldn't confirm something, we say so.
Quick facts
- Crossing
- Sadao / Dannok (Songkhla, Thailand) to Bukit Kayu Hitam (Kedah, Malaysia) [M1]
- Hours
- 06:00 to midnight Malaysian time, which is 05:00 to 23:00 Thai time. Malaysia is one hour ahead [M1][M3][M7]
- Quietest times
- Before 08:00 or after 21:00 Malaysian time. Avoid Friday evenings, Saturday mornings, and school or public holidays [M7]
- Thai side, for the bike
- A Thai customs "special declaration" (ใบขนสินค้าพิเศษ) to take the bike out temporarily. You can pre-register free online at tta.customs.go.th. Return it on re-entry, or pay a 1,000 baht fine if you're late [M4]
- Malaysian side, for the bike
- ICP from JPJ, free, valid 90 days. Malaysian third-party insurance, bought at the border [M5][M6]
- VEP / RFID tag
- Not required at the Thai border. Malaysia's VEP system currently runs only at the Singapore border, and motorcycles are exempt even there [M8][M9][M10]
- Tolls
- Motorcycles don't pay tolls on Malaysian expressways [M11]
- Fuel
- Foreign-registered vehicles may not buy RON95. Use RON97. Since 1 April 2026, drivers as well as petrol stations can face enforcement action [M12][M13]
- Arrival card
- Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC), online, within 3 days before arrival. Singaporeans and holders of a Thai border pass are among those exempt [M14][M15]
- Visa-free stay
- Thai and most other ASEAN nationals: less than one month without a visa [M16]. UK: 90 days [M17]. US: 90 days [M18]. Germany: 3 months [M19, FLAGGED]. Australia: 90 days [M20, FLAGGED]
Step by step: Thailand to Malaysia on your own Thai bike
- At home, a week or more ahead:
- Get an English translation of the bike's green book (registration book) at any Department of Land Transport office. One rider paid 55 baht at the Ranong office and it took 20 minutes [M21]. A Malaysian rider's guide says it costs about 50 baht [M6]. JPJ requires a registration certificate with a Malay or English translation [M5].
- Bring a licence Malaysia accepts. JPJ requires a licence with a Malay or English translation [M5]. Thai licences are accepted under the ASEAN agreement [M6]. Thai Customs at Sadao recommends an International Driving Permit or the newer English-language smart-card licence [M4]. Foreigners should carry an International Driving Permit together with their home licence [M18].
- Online, within 3 days before you cross: submit the MDAC at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main. Use only that official address, because fake MDAC sites exist [M14]. A Thai rider who crossed in 2024 entered his hotel address and his bike's plate number in English [M21].
- Optional: pre-register the bike's export paper on Thai Customs' free TTA site (tta.customs.go.th). Choose "บันทึกใบขนสินค้าพิเศษ (รถยนต์-ขาออก)" (car export). Motorcycles also use this system. You'll get an 8-digit reference number to show at the border [M4].
- Roman-letter plate: Malaysia requires your plate number in Roman letters. Red Thai plates (new bikes not yet registered) are not allowed in [M5]. English plate stickers are sold at the border on both sides [M6]. One rider paid 200 baht through an agent [M21].
- Thai immigration: on a motorcycle, park near the main immigration building and get stamped out inside. There's no drive-through for bikes [M22]. A rider on a Malaysian bike in June 2024 used immigration counter 2 for bikes [M3].
- Thai customs: show the green book (original or a certified copy), your passport, and an owner's authorisation letter if the bike isn't in your name. Customs checks the bike and issues the special declaration. Keep it safe, because you hand it back when you return [M4]. The Thai customs process can be done at the new Sadao customs checkpoint or at the old one [M4].
- Malaysian immigration: use the motorcycle lane and get stamped in [M6].
- Insurance and plate stickers: just past the checkpoint, park at the tourist information building on the left. Across the road, tents sell Malaysian third-party insurance and English plate stickers [M6]. Your Thai insurance is not valid in Malaysia [M6].
- ICP at JPJ: go to the JPJ office at the border complex, just after Malaysian immigration [M6]. Fill in form JPJK9 (free) [M5]. The ICP is valid for 90 days, and JPJ can extend it by another 90 days, up to 180 days a year [M5].
- JPJ will not issue an ICP to a vehicle with unpaid Malaysian traffic fines [M23].
- In March 2026, JPJ said Thai vehicles found without an ICP more than 2 km from the border will be seized [M23].
- The ICP is for private use only. Using the vehicle for any business is an offence [M23].
- Ride on. There's no money changer on the Malaysian side of the border, so bring ringgit. A Malaysian guide suggests about RM500 for insurance, stickers and so on [M6].
Documents checklist
- Passport valid for at least 6 months [M17][M18]
- MDAC confirmation, or a Thai border pass if you hold one [M14][M15]
- Original green book, or a certified copy [M4]
- English or Malay translation of the green book from the Department of Land Transport [M5][M6][M21]
- Owner's authorisation letter and a copy of the owner's ID card, if the bike isn't yours [M4][M6]
- Driving licence with an English translation (a Thai smart card or an IDP), or an IDP together with your home licence [M4][M5][M18]
- Malaysian third-party insurance, bought at the border [M5][M6]
- ICP from JPJ at the border [M5][M6]
- Plate in Roman letters (a sticker is fine). No red plates [M5][M6]
- Helmet. It's compulsory for riders in Malaysia [M5]
- TTA reference number, if you pre-registered [M4]
- Ringgit in cash [M6]
Rental and borrowed bikes
- Thai Customs requires an authorisation letter from the registered owner, plus a copy of the owner's ID card, before it will issue the export paper for a bike that isn't in your name. A company-owned bike needs a company letter and the company registration certificate [M4]. A Malaysian guide says the same authorisation letter is needed on the Malaysian side [M6].
- Red-plated bikes (new, not yet registered) are refused at the Malaysian border [M5].
- [FLAGGED: we found no source from October 2023 or later on whether Thai rental shops allow trips to Malaysia, what they charge or what deposit they take. Ask the shop before you rent.]
Roads and riding on the Malaysian side
- North–South Expressway (PLUS): the crossing joins it directly [M1]. Penang (Butterworth or George Town) is about 160 km away, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours. Kuala Lumpur is about 480 to 490 km [M1]. A rider on his own bike went from Hat Yai through Sadao to Taiping (277 km) in a little over 4 hours in June 2024, on highways all the way [M3].
- Tolls: motorcycles are exempt. In August 2025, the highway authority dismissed rumours that motorcycle tolls were coming [M11]. Touch 'n Go is still useful for parking. In Penang, street parking is paid by app through Touch 'n Go [M21]. [FLAGGED: we found no source saying a foreign motorcycle needs Touch 'n Go or an RFID tag at the border. No source says it's required.]
- Which side of the road: traffic in Malaysia keeps left, as in Thailand [M18][M21].
- Fuel: buy RON97 only. Foreign-registered vehicles may not buy RON95, even after the subsidy reform [M12][M13]. A Thai rider in 2024 quoted RON97 at about 25 to 26 baht a litre [M21].
- Safety: Malaysia had about 630,000 traffic accidents and about 5,100 deaths in 2024. The US State Department says riders and drivers often weave through traffic and run red lights, and that motorcyclists sometimes ride on pavements [M18].
- Weather: the northeast monsoon (November to March) floods the east-coast states. The southwest monsoon (May to September) brings flash floods to cities [M18].
- Fines: in January 2025, JPJ ran an operation at the Thai border stopping Thai vehicles with unpaid fines [M24]. It now won't issue an ICP until fines are paid [M23]. Pay any Malaysian fine before your next trip.
Coming back into Thailand
- Get stamped out at Malaysian immigration, then stamped into Thailand at Sadao.
- Hand the Thai customs special declaration back at the vehicle inbound checkpoint. If you're past its time limit, you pay a 1,000 baht fine [M4].
- Thai riders using an agent in 2024 had TM2 and TM3 forms prepared for the Thai border [M21]. [FLAGGED: no 2023+ source confirms whether a Thai-plated bike returning home needs TM2/TM3. Foreign vehicles entering Thailand do need them [M7].]
- Thai immigration can charge overtime fees after 17:00 and on public holidays. A 2026 guide for Malaysians entering Thailand lists 10 baht per rider and 3 baht per pillion on a motorcycle [M7].
- Foreigners re-entering Thailand fall under Thai visa rules, which are outside this page's scope. [FLAGGED: a March 2026 Malaysian blog says visa-exempt foreigners get 15 days at land borders and that land entries are limited to two a year [M1]. We haven't confirmed this with Thai Immigration.]
Padang Besar, briefly
Padang Besar (Songkhla) to Padang Besar (Perlis) is the other main crossing on this stretch of border. It's open 06:00 to 22:00 Malaysian time [M25]. In October 2025, Perlis was still discussing with Thai officials whether to extend this to midnight [M26]. It's also the rail crossing, which Sadao is not [M1]. We found no recent rider accounts of taking a motorcycle through Padang Besar, so this page recommends Sadao.
Other road crossings on the Malaysian side and their 2025 hours [M25]:
- Wang Kelian: 08:00 to 19:00
- Pengkalan Hulu (Betong): 06:00 to 23:00
- Rantau Panjang (Sungai Kolok): 06:00 to 22:00
- Durian Burung: 08:00 to 18:00
- Pengkalan Kubor and Bukit Bunga: 06:00 to 19:00
All times are Malaysian time.
FAQ
Can I ride my Thai motorcycle into Malaysia?
Yes, if it's registered in Thailand and shows its plate in Roman letters. You need a Thai customs export paper, Malaysian third-party insurance and a free ICP from JPJ [M4][M5][M6].
Do I need a VEP, an RFID tag or Autopass for a motorcycle?
No, not at the Thai border. In October 2026, Malaysia was still studying whether to extend its VEP system to the Thai border [M8]. Motorcycles are exempt from VEP even at the Singapore border [M9][M10]. One March 2026 blog says the VEP is compulsory for motorcycles [M1], but the official and news sources above contradict it. "Autopass" is a Singapore card, not a Malaysian one.
Is the ICP free? How long does it last?
Yes, the JPJK9 form is free. The ICP lasts 90 days and can be extended to a maximum of 180 days a year [M5]. Agents sell an ICP service. One rider in 2024 paid an agent 700 baht for one month and 2,000 baht for three months for a car [M21].
How much is Malaysian insurance for a motorcycle?
[FLAGGED: we found no price from October 2023 or later for a Thai motorcycle. A Thai car driver paid 900 baht for one month through an agent in 2024 [M21]. Motorcycle cover is likely to cost a different amount.]
Do I need the MDAC?
Yes, unless you're exempt, for example as a Singaporean or the holder of a Thai border pass. Submit it within 3 days before arrival, and only on the official site [M14][M15].
Do Thai citizens need a visa for Malaysia?
No, not for a stay of less than one month [M16].
Do Malaysians need anything?
Not for entering their own country. A Malaysian riding into Thailand needs the Thai paperwork. Malaysians entering Thailand by land get 30 days, according to a March 2026 Malaysian blog [M1]. [FLAGGED: not confirmed with Thai Immigration.]
What about UK, US, EU and Australian riders?
UK: 90 days [M17]. US: 90 days, and you need an IDP with your licence to drive [M18]. Germany: 3 months [M19] [FLAGGED: undated Malaysian embassy page]. Australia: 90 days [M20] [FLAGGED: page not opened]. [FLAGGED: other EU countries weren't checked one by one. Check the Malaysian Immigration list for your passport.]
Can I take a rented bike to Malaysia?
Only with the owner's authorisation letter and a copy of their ID card, and only if the bike has a normal registered plate [M4][M5]. [FLAGGED: no source on rental shop policies.]
Can I fill up with cheap petrol?
No. Foreign-registered vehicles must buy RON97, and since April 2026 the rider can be penalised too [M12][M13].
Do motorcycles pay tolls in Malaysia?
No [M11].
